The Canadian economy added only 1,100 net jobs in February, all of which were part-time positions. According to a report released today by Statistics Canada, the labour market remained sluggish last month, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 6.6 percent. This followed a more robust gain of 76,000 jobs in January.

Statistics Canada reported that Canada lost 19,700 full-time jobs in February, which was offset by the addition of 20,800 part-time jobs, resulting in the modest net increase of 1,100 jobs.

The wholesale and retail trade sector, along with the finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing industry, led the job gains in February. This report marks the last major data release before the Bank of Canada’s interest rate decision on March 12. The currency swap market is currently indicating a 73 percent chance of an interest rate cut.

Bank of Canada Cuts Key Interest Rate Amid Trade War

On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada reduced its key policy rate by 25 basis points to 2.75 percent, marking the seventh consecutive interest rate cut. This decision comes in response to the ongoing trade war between Canada and the United States. Governor Tiff Macklem stated that the economy had started the year strong, with solid GDP growth and inflation around two percent. However, tariff uncertainty has impacted business spending and consumer confidence, prompting the central bank to lower the interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point. Macklem also emphasized that the bank will proceed

Rebel BC Conservative MLAs Consider Forming New Party

Three rebel BC Conservative MLAs are considering forming a new political party after the party recently expelled Vancouver-Quilchena MLA Dallas Brodie due to controversial comments about residential schools. In solidarity, two other MLAs, Jordan Kelly and Tara Armstrong, also left the party. To gain party status in the BC legislature, a minimum of two MLAs is required. This means that Brodie, Armstrong, and Kelly could qualify for party status and benefit from several advantages. The new party would be allocated an annual budget of approximately $767,000 for staff and office expenses. Additio

Pakistani security forces exchanged gunfire on Wednesday with hundreds of separatist militants as they sought to free about 300 hostages aboard a train in the country’s rugged southwest, officials said. Security forces were being cautious as officials said the hostages were surrounded by militants wearing vests loaded with explosives.
