Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar says he will step down as leader of the country soon as a successor is chosen.

Varadkar announced Wednesday he is quitting immediately as head of Fine Gael party, part of Ireland’s coalition government. He’ll be replaced as prime minister after a party leadership contest. He said his reasons were “both personal and political.”

Varadkar, 45, has had two spells as taoiseach, or prime minister between 2017 and 2020, and again since December 2022.

He was the country’s youngest-ever leader when first elected, as well as Ireland’s first openly gay prime minister. Varadkar, whose mother is Irish and father is Indian, was also Ireland’s first biracial taoiseach.

“I’m proud that we have made the country a more equal and more modern place,” he said in a resignation statement in Dublin.

Poilievre argues that the executive order Carney signed to eliminate the tax is a fake, insisting that it remains in effect and hasn't been removed anywhere. He also warned that it could be reintroduced after the election. During a visit to a steel company in L'Orignal village, Ontario, Poilievre criticized Carney’s plan to increase the carbon tax on Canadian companies, especially in the context of

The union representing more than 4,000 school support workers says they have reached tentative deals that could end a two-month strike as early as Wednesday. US President Donald Trump has initiated deportation proceedings under the 227-year-old Alien Enemies Act, resulting in the deportation of 261 Venezuelan immigrants to a supermax prison in El Salvador. The US government took action under this law, alleging that the deported individuals were members of a drug trafficking gang.
