Canada has announced its support for the U.S. ceasefire proposal for Ukraine. Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly stated at the conclusion of the G7 meeting in Quebec today that the G7 countries are united in backing the U.S. initiative. Joly emphasized that the international community is now closely monitoring Moscow’s response, noting that the ball is now in Russia’s court.

Joly also clarified that during the G7 meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on Canadian sovereignty were not discussed with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Instead, their discussions focused on U.S. tariffs, which she warned would harm both Canadian and American economies.

He noted that Steven McKinnon now serves as the Minister of Jobs and Families, and while labor-related matters may still fall under his responsibilities, the portfolio’s name carries significant meaning.
